AQUALOGUS has conducted, for Parques de Sintra - Monte da Lua (PSML), an eradication programme for exotic fish species in two reservoirs of Tapada de Monserrate, Sintra (Portugal). These reservoirs are both located in the Protected Area of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (PNSC). This environmental protection programme was held in articulation with PSML and PNSC technicians.
The intervention aimed to increase the ecological value of those reservoirs and boost its adequacy for native faunistic communities (e.g., amphibians), by eliminating the pressure exerted by the existing population of largemouth black bass.
The capture of exotic species was performed by electric fishing, ensuring the good condition of the captured species, placing them in tanks with portable oxygenators. The native species were returned alive to the ecosystem, while the exotic species were removed in an environmentally proper operation.
