Açudes do Mondego

DESCRIPTION

The project objective was the study and design of fish passage devices to be implemented in six dams of the Mondego river in order to make them transposable for the migratory fish species, particularly the anadromous ones.

The aim is to increase the stocks of fish species, which in addition to conservation issues are also reflected in professional and sport fishing activities - also considering the compatibility with other anthropic uses (for human consumption, irrigation or industry), energy production and recreational activities (canoeing, river beaches and pedestrian paths).

The solutions developed for the dam’s passages are of a "naturalized" typology with uniformly distributed rockfall blocks ramps and passages in successive basins. In one of the reservoirs, the solution envisaged is based on the concept of naturalized passage but with the necessary adaptations to its implementation in an existing concrete reservoir. Three of these dams have been planned for kayak passageways. The naturalized passages present higher indices of naturalness, better integrated in the landscape and can promote a more efficient transposition by the present fish species.
