LIFE Saramugo

DESCRIPTION

This project is part of the LIFE+ program, which is a European Union financial instrument that supports environmental and nature conservation projects. In this project AQUALOGUS is part of a consortium of Portuguese entities, including the LPN (Nature Protection League), ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests) and the Évora University.

The LIFE SARAMUGO project (lifesaramugo.lpn.pt) aims to increase the population of Saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica) through the improvement of its natural habitats in the Portuguese section of the Guadiana river basin.

The work to be developed includes a wide diversity of actions, highlighting the following:

  • Update the species population situation in the Portuguese historical occurrence area.
  • Rehabilitation of the ecosystem (eg, shelter habitats, feeding and reproduction habitats).
  • Re-establishment of connectivity between population nucleuses.
  • Control of invasive alien fish species.
  • Improvement of the treatment of domestic and industrial effluents.
  • Control of water captions and water quality improvement.
  • Selective control of the ichthyofauna in the transposition of weirs and dams.
  • Environmental awareness campaigns.
  • Monitoring of the population of Saramugo and measures to be implemented during the project.
